Glass adhesive Gluing glass can be an intimidating venture. Glass is clear, fragile, and smooth, so gluing it to anything without ruining its appearance can be difficult. Fortunately, there are several special types of glue that can be used to adhere glass to just about any material. Learning how to glue glass is a matter of buying the right supplies and following a few easy steps. 1Determine the correct type of glue needed for your project. There are 2 types of adhesive that are suitable for use with glass: UV glue and silicone sealant. If your project will be exposed to a lot of water, glue the glass using silicone. Other glues are generally water or acrylic-based, and will degrade over time with water contact. If you are building or repairing an aquarium, for instance, you should use a silicone-based adhesive. If water contact is not a concern, you should glue glass using UV glue. UV glue is a type of light-cured glue, which means it hardens (or "cures") when exposed to light in this case, ultra-violet light. There are many different types of UV glue, with some specialized for certain applications (glass to metal, glass to plastic, etc.). However, most of them will be suitable for gluing glass to any other material. 2 Purchase the amount of glue you will need. UV glue can be purchased at some hardware stores and art supply stores, but buying it online is the best bet to ensure a good selection. It is quite expensive and usually sold in bottles as small as a quarter ounce (7.4 ml). Silicone glue can be purchased from hardware stores, aquarium supply stores, or some pet stores. Estimate how much you will need to determine the amount you should buy; the manufacturer will specify how much coverage you can expect per bottle. 3 Clean all surfaces that will be bonded using soap and water. Exercise caution when handling any broken glass pieces. After cleaning, wipe each piece dry thoroughly with a clean clothe 4 Apply a small amount of UV or silicone glue to 1 of the edges that will be bonded. 5 Press it firmly against the other piece and hold it for about 1 minute until the glue has partially set. Wipe any excess glue away carefully with a clean cloth. If you are using silicone sealant, consider clamping the pieces of glass together to form a strong bond while the glue sets. Be careful not to over-tighten the clamp and crack the glass.Allow the glue to cure completely. This process differs depending on the type of glue you are using. If you are using UV glue, place the glued glass into bright sunlight. UV glue will only cure under fairly intense UV light. Commercial operations use UV lamps for this, but since you are not likely to have a UV lamp, curing the glue under sunlight is the best option. The amount of time needed for the glue to set will vary with the intensity of the sunlight and the amount of glue used. Check the project every 5 minutes to see if it has set properly. If you are using silicone glue, allow the glued glass to rest for 24 hours. The glue will set best if left in a room-temperature location and not exposed to direct sunlight. After 24 hours, remove the clamps carefully if you used them. 6 Shave away any excess glue with a razor blade. As the glue cures, it may ooze from the joint a little and harden in place. Carefully shave away this excess glue with a razor blade. Wipe the project clean when finished. Both UV and silicone glues will dry completely clear, so the appearance of the glass should be preserved. 7 Finished! resources from: http://www.wikihow.com/Glue-Glass Guangdong Province.
